Our partner’s comment: The inspiration for the BookHoof association comes from this event that was run in conjunction with students from three institutions in Nantes – Centrale Nantes (an Engineering School), Audencia (a Business School) and ENSA (a School of Architecture) – who were set the task of producing a children’s storybook across a three-day workshop. The success of this workshop and the joy the students took from it created the spirit and drive to create something which would permit this spirit and initiative to grow of its own volition.

Partner: Association Soutien Migrants Redon

Group size: 20 participants + 6 volunteers

Profiles of participants: Immigrant families, newly arrived in France

Collection of books: Multi-lingual story books

Language (s): French, Armenian, Georgian, Russian, Arabic, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, English

Our partner’s comment:
It was wonderful to see the families working together, parents and children, to invent, write and illustrate their stories. They were then helped by volunteers to translate their stories into French. The two days of workshops were full of creative energy and friendships were formed while working and playing together and sharing meals. The families will meet again soon to read or act out their stories for each other. The next important step will be to organise the printing of the books so that each family can take home a real printed version of the books that they made so that they can read their stories together, in all the family’s languages. It is also heart-warming to think that other families who speak the languages of these stories will be able to enjoy reading them too and in this way improve their French language skills while at the same time maintaining their family languages.

Centrale nantes bachelor

Location: Centrale Nantes

Partner: Centrale Mauritius

Group size: 23

Profiles of participants: Engineering students

Collection of books: 14 Engineering Challenges of the future (pitched at teenagers)

Language (s): English

Our partner’s comment: In the Autumn of 2018, Mauritian students at Centrale Nantes created books based on 14 Engineering Challenges of the Future, which were pitched at teenagers and therefore needed to present complex ideas and terminology in a way that was accessible, but also fun for teenagers. The books they produced were of a magnificently high standard, written and illustrated beautifully, and the students found the project very rewarding, in that it was a team-building exercise, a project management exercise, something creative and liberating, but also an activity which made students aware of the value of making complex scientific information comprehensible and available to all.
